Graphic Design at UT

Since attending UT, I have had multiple opportunities to express my graphic illustration and design skills. Below is a logo design for a TSTV food variety show I produce, HookBang.

Commissions

I spent the summer of my senior year of highschool completing commissions to raise money for college.

I was commissioned by a local librarian to design a cover for his website. (2022)

AP Portfolio

2019-2020

My sophomore year has been all about growth and rolling with the punches as I navigate taking my first ap art course. My purpose during the course of AP art design is to explore the imagination of the human mind. I want to traverse and illustrate the psychology of maturity when it comes to this extremely obscure concept. In this previous year, I had created a portrait that included unworldly creatures buzzing about a profile of one of my family members. I wanted to play with the idea that our imagination is always there, even if it seems lost in the setbacks of adulthood. I aim to continue this series for my portfolio with more portraits entailing subjects only the mind of a child could fabricate. I plan on researching the psychology behind imagination and how something so abstract can be measured. Not only do I want to learn about the science behind it but the people who embraced their imagination through adulthood to gain success in their careers. I plan on doing most of my pieces in colored pencil but I’d like to try some new techniques, I want to create at least one oil portrait with layered elements and a few acrylic paintings. For the oil, I want to create a well rendered portrait and layer thick hard stock that has illustrations of creatures I deem fit the painting. I also want to create a piece that has a background of ink blots, similar to the ink blot tests psychologists give to their patients. I hope I am able to capture my audience’s attention and gain a significant, questionative reaction.

Children's Book Assignment

2018-2019

In my 2D art class, we were assigned to recreate a page in poorly illustrated children's books. I chose the series of Elephant & Piggie by Mo Willems, these books weren't poorly illustrated but they were simple. I was interested in a realistic rendering of these two lovable characters. This specific page is from the book, We’re Invited to a Party, in the story they aren’t sure what time of party it will be so they dress for every occasion, pool, fancy, and costume party. I painted Elephant and Piggie with their wild attire on and added some of my artistic flare. On Piggie’s arm, she has a pigeon tattoo, that is a reference to Mo Willems’ other books, his pigeon series. I remember growing up with all of his books and it meant a lot to me that I include a spoof of his other characters. Now that I’m older I wanted these characters to age somewhat with me while also following the assignment, by making Elephant and Piggie more realistic it improves the simple and drab original illustration while also allowing me to add my new and advanced style to come through. My process began with color blocking and slowly elevated to the detail the current piece. I chose to leave the background white because I wanted to honor Willems’ idea of “the background is left for the readers imagination.” That is a similar reason for leaving the chat bubbles blank, to not only let the viewer come up with the dialogue but those taking pictures of my piece can edit responses on their phones.

Elevate Exhibition

March 2019

The exhibition at Elevate in Dallas requested pieces that pertained to a social issue. I used previous works including a mixed media piece on wood focusing on sexual harassment, including the medical and emotional effects it can cause. I entered a 3D piece which was a sculpted panda head mounted on a self-made plack, I used a real bullet to represent the “bullet” that humanity is using to put more and more animals on the endangered species list. The bullet represents pollution, poaching, deforestation, and all the man-made events that are killing our planet. Learning about this exhibition I decided to create a whole new series of pieces as well, these pieces concerned human trafficking. I chose bright, neon color scheme to catch the viewer’s eye and had an overall connection between all the pieces through similar shapes and designs. Each piece relates to either a method or a popular occurrence when it comes the secret underworld of buying, using, selling humans. The first piece, Witness Protection, focuses on the events during the abduction, if possible, victims are able to get some kind of authorities attention that usually lets them slowly escape without suspicion. I depicted this through an eye secreting somewhat of a discolored tear to follow the color scheme, this allowed me to make the show a sense of fear and seem alert like it’s “witnessing” these events take place. The second piece, Worldwide, is about the epidemic that is human trafficking. Many of those don’t know about what horrors lie behind their comfort, and this topic is a very real awakening to that topic. I painted somewhat of a figure in front of the passport symbol due to many abductions taking place outside of the U.S. The third and fourth piece focuses on the actual event of being captured and not realizing it. The third piece is called Trust because it’s about the grooming process of the captor before using you, I depicted this through a tongue with a smiley face on it (the captor is feeding you false ideas of what he is doing). The final piece is called Target because I painted the two main targets for human trafficking, healthy boys and vulnerable women.
